Pregnancy Test Q&A

Why should I take a pregnancy test?

Whether you’re trying to become pregnant or think you may be pregnant, there are several instances in which you should take a pregnancy test. For example, you may need to take a pregnancy test if you miss your period or notice that your period is later than usual.

In some cases, spotting or faint bleeding could be a sign of implantation from pregnancy. This minor rust-colored bleeding — which doesn’t affect all women — generally occurs around the time you should get your period, but it isn’t actually menstrual flow. Because many of these signs could be indicators of pregnancy, it’s important to take a pregnancy test.

How does a pregnancy test work?

Calvary Urgent Care offers in-house urine and blood pregnancy tests. Both types of tests check for human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), a type of hormone. When a fertilized egg implants itself in your uterine lining, your hCG levels gradually rise.

A urine pregnancy test can detect hCG and confirm a pregnancy about two weeks after ovulation, or right about the time you’ve missed your period.

Blood pregnancy tests can detect hCG and confirm a pregnancy much faster. You can undergo a blood pregnancy test at Calvary Urgent Care about six to eight days after ovulation or up to a week before your period should start.

When will I get my pregnancy test results?

Calvary Urgent Care provides both urine and blood pregnancy tests for patient convenience and to tailor to your needs, based on where you’re in your cycle. One of the reasons urine tests are recommended first is because they provide instant results within a few minutes. You can find out during your appointment if you may be pregnant.

The downfall of the urine test is that it can provide a false negative if you take it too early, which is why a blood pregnancy test is sometimes recommended. But because your blood specimen has to go to the lab, it could take a day or two to get your results back.

Calvary Urgent Care provides comprehensive pregnancy testing on a walk-in basis when needed. You can also book a visit online.
