STD Testing Q&A

What are STDs?

Any viral, bacterial, or parasitic infection that can only be passed through sexual contact is considered an STD. Although any sexually active person is at risk of infection, adolescents and young adults represent about half of all new diagnoses. The most common STDs are:

HPV

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most prevalent sexual infection. It’s so common that experts believe most people have it soon after becoming sexually active. Most people with HPV don’t experience symptoms and are never diagnosed. Frequently, the infection goes away on its own.

HPV testing — which is currently only available for women — is still important, however, as certain types of HPV increase the risk of developing cervical, vulvar, or vaginal cancer.

Chlamydia and gonorrhea

While they may not be as widespread as HPV, chlamydia and gonorrhea are still common, and rank as the most frequently diagnosed STDs. Both these infections can produce symptoms that mirror a urinary tract infection, including abnormal vaginal or penile discharge and painful or burning urination. Both are treatable with antibiotics.

Genital Herpes

One in six adults has genital herpes, an extremely contagious viral infection that often causes painful sores on or around your genitals. Not everyone who gets herpes develops symptoms, however, so it’s possible to carry and transmit this STD without knowing it.

Why is STD testing important?

STD testing is a critical component of routine preventive health care for anyone who’s sexually active, including those who have just one partner. Given that many people carry STDs without any outward signs or symptoms, regular STD screenings are the only way to detect an infection that’s asymptomatic or dormant.

Routine testing also gives you a chance to discover an infection early, so you can treat the problem as soon as possible, inform your partner(s), prevent its spread, and avoid long-term health complications.

Which STD tests are available?

The walk-in clinic at Calvary Urgent Care offers quick and confidential testing for a complete range of STDs, including:

  • Chlamydia
  • Gonorrhea
  • Syphilis
  • Herpes
  • HPV (low-risk and high-risk)
  • Hepatitis B and C
  • Trichomoniasis
  • HIV/AIDS

Although most STDs can be detected with a simple blood draw or urine sample, HPV — which can only be diagnosed in women at this time — requires a cervical swab, much like a Pap smear.
